Spoiler warning: this review covers all of Black Clover season 2, episode 2, including its ending. It does not spoil anything from the manga beyond what this episode adapts.
Black Clover season 2, episode 2, "The Door to Hell", is the 172nd episode of the anime overall and only the second since the show came back after a gap of more than five years. The premiere spent most of its time getting everyone back into position. This one spends none. It runs four captain fights, a villain's reveal and the arrival of two new devils in a single 24 minutes.
So this review of one episode has two questions to answer. Does the comeback hold up in week two? And if you last watched Black Clover in March 2021 and remember about half the names, can you follow it? My answers are "mostly yes" and "not without help", and the help is further down this page.
The short version
Black Clover season 2 episode 2 is a strong, good-looking episode that moves too fast. Mereoleona, Yuno, Charlotte and Jack each land a major blow in the Spade Kingdom raid, then Morris speeds up the ritual and the first gate to the underworld opens early, letting the twin devils Lilith and Naamah through. It keeps the comeback going, but it explains almost nothing for lapsed viewers. I give it 7.5 out of 10.
Where the story stands
The original anime stopped at episode 170 in March 2021, in the middle of the Spade Kingdom arc. The Spade Kingdom is run by the Dark Triad, three siblings who each host a devil: Dante, Zenon and Vanica Zogratis. They kidnapped two Clover Kingdom captains, Yami Sukehiro of the Black Bulls and William Vangeance of the Golden Dawn, to use as sacrifices in a ritual called the Tree of Qliphoth. The ritual opens gates between the human world and the underworld, one at a time, and lets devils walk through.
The Magic Knights had a few days to stop it. Asta spent them training with Nacht, the Black Bulls' vice-captain, and making a proper pact with Liebe, the devil inside his grimoire. Last week's premiere finished that training and started the raid: the knights broke into Spade Castle and split into groups, one for each member of the Triad.
What happens in Black Clover season 2 episode 2?
The episode opens outside the castle. Morris, the Spade Kingdom's devil researcher, has let an ancient demon loose, and Mereoleona Vermillion takes it alone. Her first attack barely marks it. She then bathes in lava and comes out wearing the fire, in a new form called Hellfire Incarnate, and punches the demon apart.
Inside, Yuno and Langris face Zenon. Zenon's spatial magic shuts Langris down completely, and Zenon says nobody can make him step back. Yuno answers with Spirit Dive: Spirit of Boreas, a stronger version of his wind spirit form, and with the spirit Bell at his side he drives an attack through Zenon's chest.
Charlotte and Rill get Vanica, who is openly bored because neither of them is Noelle. Charlotte has learned to feed on the curse that used to weaken her. She becomes the Queen of Briars, her roses absorb Vanica's curse power, and the briars swallow Vanica whole.
Jack the Ripper and Nacht fight Dante, who heals from anything and pins people to the floor with gravity. A short flashback shows Jack as a hunter's son who went after the beast that killed his father. His Slash Magic adapts to whatever it cuts, and it adapts here: first it cuts the gravity, then it cuts Dante in a way he cannot heal.
Then the rug is pulled. Morris reveals that he has taken Lolopechka's knowledge for himself and is using it to hurry the ritual. The first gate opens ahead of schedule, and two high-ranking devils step out in front of Nacht.
My review: great to look at, too quick to feel
The best scene is Charlotte's, and it is not close. The other three fights work on the usual shonen logic of "I trained, so now I am stronger". Hers has an idea in it. The curse was the thing that defined her as a victim for the whole original series, and the episode turns it into fuel: the stronger the curse aimed at her, the stronger her roses get. Vanica wanted a fight and gets denied one. That is a better punishment for that character than a big explosion.
Visually this is a clear step up from the weekly grind of the old run. Hellfire Incarnate, Spirit of Boreas, the Queen of Briars and Jack's blade-covered body are four very different looks, and each gets a properly finished reveal shot. The old Black Clover saved this level of polish for a handful of famous episodes. Season 2 is spending it in week two.
The music choice everyone is talking about is "Black Rover", the opening theme from the original run, returning as an insert song when Yuno transforms. It is a shameless nostalgia button and it works.
What didn't work for me is the speed. Four boss fights in one episode means no fight gets a middle. Each one goes: villain gloats, captain reveals new form, villain is beaten. The Dark Triad were built up across dozens of episodes as the most dangerous people in this world, and three of them are put down inside roughly 15 minutes. CBR's review made the same complaint, and also counted four flashbacks. I agree with the first point more than the second. Jack's flashback earns its place because he has never had one. The problem is that it has about a minute to do its job.
Is Black Clover season 2 easy to follow if you forgot the story?
No, not on its own. The premiere opened with a recap, but episode 2 assumes you know who all ten or so people on screen are, and several of them were minor characters in the original run.
Here is the minimum you need for this episode:
- Mereoleona Vermillion: the royal who has been leading the Crimson Lion Kings, and the most feared fire user in the Clover Kingdom.
- Charlotte Roselei: captain of the Blue Rose Knights, cursed since childhood, and in love with Yami. The curse traces back to Megicula, the devil Vanica hosts.
- Jack the Ripper: captain of the Green Mantis and Yami's loudest rival. Before this episode he was mostly comic relief.
- Langris Vaude: the Golden Dawn's vice-captain and Finral's younger brother, a spatial magic user like Zenon.
- Nacht Faust: the Black Bulls' vice-captain, who fights by merging with his own devils. Equus and Felis are two of those forms.
- Morris: the Spade Kingdom scientist running the ritual.
- Lolopechka: the Heart Kingdom's queen, captured by Vanica. She knows more about magic than anyone alive, which is why Morris stealing her knowledge matters.
With that list, the episode is simple: every fight is one captain settling one personal score. Without it, it is 24 minutes of strangers shouting spell names. I think the season should have spent two or three lines of dialogue per fight on this, and it had no room to, which is the pacing problem again.
Are the Dark Triad defeated in episode 2?
They are beaten on screen, but the episode stops short of confirming that any of them is finished. Zenon takes a hole through the torso, Vanica disappears under the briars and Dante is cut in a way his healing does not fix. Nobody checks a body, and nobody rescues Yami or William.
My opinion is that these are first-round wins. This is episode 2 of a cour with at least 12 episodes dated, the captives are still captive, and all three siblings host devils whose full power the anime has not shown. A story does not retire its main villains this early and this quickly.
Black Clover season 2 episode 2 ending explained
The ending means the knights' plan has failed even though they won their fights. The plan depended on time: Nacht believed they could beat the Triad before the first gate opened. Morris removes that margin. Using Lolopechka's knowledge and devil power, he accelerates the Tree of Qliphoth, and the first gate opens while the fights are still being wrapped up.
The two figures who appear before Nacht are twin devils. Coverage of the episode names them Lilith and Naamah (some fan sources spell the second name Nahamah). They are described as high-ranking devils, a tier above anything the knights have fought so far in this arc. The Dark Triad borrow their power from devils who stay in the underworld. These two have simply walked in.
That is what the title, "The Door to Hell", refers to. The mission started as a rescue. From this scene on it is about closing a door. None of the reviews and recaps I read mentions a scene after the credits.
Where is Asta in episode 2?
Asta is not at the castle. He and Liebe are still training, and CBR's review says the episode closes on them. Noelle is also absent, which is why Vanica is so uninterested in Charlotte.
I like this choice. Black Clover's weakness was always that every problem ended with Asta swinging a sword at it. An episode where the captains carry everything makes the world feel bigger, and it sets up the obvious next beat: the devils that have just arrived are exactly the kind of enemy Anti-Magic exists for, and its only user is not there yet.
Details that are easy to miss
- Nacht turns his back when Mereoleona walks out of the lava. It is a quick joke, and one of the few in the episode.
- Zenon's shock is not only at Yuno's power. When Bell appears, he notices that the mana around him has stopped fully obeying him, which is the first time his control of a space has been contested.
- Vanica brings up Yami to needle Charlotte. It shows she knows exactly who she is fighting and still does not take her seriously.
- Nacht can survive Dante's gravity in his Equus form but cannot hurt him. The fight is set up so that only Jack can win it, which is why Nacht picked him.
- Morris is shown with a devil's eyes. He is no longer just a researcher standing behind the Triad.
Theories: what I think happens next
These are guesses from what the anime has shown, not from the manga.
The Triad are not done. As I said above, the wins came too cheaply. I expect at least one of the siblings to get back up with more of their devil's power on show. The other reading is that the Triad really are finished and Morris and the devils take over as the arc's villains. I lean towards the first, because Yami and William are still in the ritual and somebody has to be standing between them and the knights.
Nacht is about to lose badly. The episode goes out of its way to show that his forms are built for survival, not damage. Putting him alone in front of two high-ranking devils is a set-up for a rescue.
That rescue is Asta's entrance. Ending on his training while the gate opens is the show telling us where the clock is.
Which manga chapters does episode 2 adapt?
According to Anime Filler Guide and the Black Clover fan wiki, episode 2 adapts chapters 275 to 279 of Yūki Tabata's manga. Chapter 279 shares the episode's title. If you want to read ahead, the story continues from chapter 280, in volume 28.
That is about five chapters in one episode, the same rate ComicBook.com measured for the premiere. The old anime adapted roughly a chapter and a half per episode and padded with original scenes. I have not found a scene-by-scene list of what this episode trimmed, so I will not guess, but the pace itself is the change: these fights are being adapted at close to the speed you would read them.
What the episode changes for the season
Three things. The captains are now a real power tier and not a row of people who stand behind Yami. The enemy has changed from three humans with devils to the devils themselves. And the deadline the whole raid was planned around is gone.
Compared with the premiere, this is the better episode. Episode 1 was set-up and people standing around talking; this one is payoff. But the premiere had room to breathe and this one has none, and I would have taken slightly less spectacle for a little more of that room.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10
For this episode alone: 7.5 out of 10. The animation and Charlotte's fight are worth more than that. The pacing, and how little it does for anyone who needs a reminder, bring it down.
Black Clover season 2 episode 3 release date and time
Episode 3 is due on Saturday 17 October 2026. It airs in Japan at 11pm JST, which is 7:30pm IST, and Crunchyroll's subtitled stream has followed about an hour later, at around 8:30pm IST. Crunchyroll carries the season in India. I could not find a confirmed title for episode 3.
Expect it to start with Nacht against Lilith and Naamah, and to show what state the Dark Triad are really in.

A full rewatch is not necessary, but a refresher on the Spade Kingdom episodes (roughly 158 to 170) helps a lot, because season 2 does not reintroduce its captains or villains.
My verdict
The comeback holds. Two episodes in, Black Clover looks better than it ever did week to week, and it has remembered that its captains are interesting. But it is being told at a sprint, for people who never left. If that is you, this is a very good week. If it is not, the show will not wait for you, and that is the one thing I would change about it.
